We carry five premium date varieties, and customers often ask which one to pick. There's no single right answer, it depends on the texture and sweetness you're after. Here's how they compare.
Ajwa Jumbo
Grown in Madinah, Ajwa is probably the most sought-after date variety, both for its taste and its religious significance. It's soft, dark, and has a mild, slightly dry sweetness rather than a sticky one. A good choice if you want the most traditional, widely recognised date.
Mabroom
Also from Saudi Arabia, Mabroom is long, slightly firmer and chewier than Ajwa, with a rich, caramel-like sweetness. If you like a date with more bite, Mabroom is a good pick.
Amber
Another Madinah variety, Amber is soft and melts easily, with a deep, rounded sweetness. It sits between Ajwa and Mabroom in texture, soft like Ajwa but with a richer flavour.
Sukkari (Sukri)
Sukkari means "sugary" in Arabic, and it lives up to the name. It's dark, plump, and distinctly sweeter than the other varieties here, with a soft, almost custard-like texture. Good for anyone who wants the sweetest option.
Kalmi
Kalmi has smooth, tender flesh and a rich caramel flavour, similar in character to Mabroom but generally softer. A versatile, crowd-pleasing choice.
Quick comparison
- Softest: Ajwa, Amber
- Chewiest: Mabroom
- Sweetest: Sukkari
- Most traditional/religious significance: Ajwa
- Best all-rounder: Kalmi
How to tell if dates are fresh
Fresh, good-quality dates should look plump rather than shrivelled, with a slight sheen. A light white coating can appear naturally over time, this is crystallised natural sugar and is safe to eat, not a sign of spoilage.
How to store them
Keep dates in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. They're best within 2 months of delivery at room temperature, or up to 6 months in the fridge.
